Facebook leads the online social network revolution with over 60 million users, and nearly half a million in the Hong Kong network alone. But beyond a tool for connecting friends, Facebook is an online application platform. With the release of the Facebook API in 2007, independent developers can create and deploy their own applications which integrate with Facebook and are available to all of its millions of users worldwide.
This workshop teaches developers the in’s and out’s of the Facebook application platform including a hands-on example using Ruby on Rails. The full application lifecycle will be taught, from planning and development to deployment and maintenance. We’ll explore other mash-up techniques, some business strategies, and discuss the state and future of online social networking.
This workshop is intended for web developers and designers who are proficient with standard web technologies (HTML, CSS, Javascript, XML) and in at least one web programming language (PHP, .NET, Java, Ruby, etc.). Familiarity with Ruby and Ruby on Rails is not required, but highly recommended.
Each student will be provided with a free Accelerator account from Joyent for hosting Facebook applications.
Our 2008 Hong Kong Web 2.0 training program is being conducted in partnership with the Hong Kong Productivity Council and Hong Kong Open Source Software Center.
