Flash has long been the de facto animation and interactive graphic standard for the Web. Over time the Flash runtime has become more and more programable. After the merger of Macromedia and Adobe in 2007, Flash became a full fledged application development environment. Adobe Flex is an open source library providing conventional layout and GUI components as well as data binding and server integration. AIR, the Adobe Integrated Runtime, brings Flash as well as HTML-based Ajax applications to the desktop. AIR applications are installed like conventional desktop applications. They can run offline, support multiple windows, and even have filesystem access.
This workshop covers the full Flash spectrum from the developer perspective. We start with lightweight web widgets for delivering music and video. We introduce Flex for building full featured graphical applications. We install our Flex application to the desktop with AIR. We provide additional functionality including file access.
Application developers with some or no prior ActionScript experience. Attendees should be proficient in some object oriented programming language (Java, C++, C#, Perl, Python, Ruby, JavaScript or similar).
